Training and Education
Training and Education
The greatest strength of Sheffield Laboratory Medicine is in our people and this is why we invest heavily in training and education, giving staff the chance to shine. This results in leading edge pathology conducted by a dedicated team of highly trained, skilled and specialised scientists.
All of our disciplines are accredited by the professional body, the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS) to train at all the relevant levels (Support, Registration and Specialist Portfolio). Our internal training programmes remain amongst the best in the country, supported by excellent cross disciplinary co-ordination and cooperation. Progression through the various diplomas provided by the IBMS is strongly supported for anyone wanting to further their career. Some of our Biomedical Scientists have also successfully undertaken the IBMS Advanced Practitioner qualification in Histology.
We continue to develop new careers at all levels, across a spectrum of roles that span organisational boundaries. We continuously develop apprenticeships in all aspects of pathology. We have successfully supported apprentices across many disciplines with the Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant, Level 4 Healthcare Science Associate and IBMS accredited Level 6 Healthcare Science Practitioner apprenticeships. We are also embarking on a Level 7 (MSc) Apprenticeship with Keele University in Research Science, specialising in Biomedical Sciences. All of our apprenticeship programmes, with the exception of Level 2, give our staff the opportunity to further enhance their knowledge and career.
We are particularly proud of our ability to deliver training necessary to support both the Scientific Training Programme (STP) and the Higher Specialist Scientific Training (HSST) Programme. In recent years, we have successfully guided both ‘Direct Entry’ and ‘In-House’ staff through the STP programme in Chemistry, some of whom have then progressed to the HSST. In addition, both Clinical and Scientific staff are supported in completing professional doctorates that aim to improve patient care through innovation in pathology, whilst also enhancing their career development.
All staff in Sheffield Laboratory Medicine have access to a comprehensive range of training including; mandatory training, laboratory competencies, appraisal training, medical terminology and specific career development courses such as; writing for publication, how to chair meetings and NHS finance courses.
If you share our passion for pathology and dedication to make a positive difference, we would love to hear from you. Please look out for opportunities to join our team on social media and NHS Jobs.
