Coagulation

Coagulation at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust forms a major part of the Haematology department within the Laboratory Medicine directorate, with a reputation both nationally and internationally for its quality service, repertoire of tests performed and experience both laboratory-based and clinical. With departments based at both the Royal Hallamshire (RHH) and the Northern General Hospitals (NGH) we provide diagnostic and support services to inpatients, outpatients and General Practitioner patients in Sheffield and surrounding areas, and specialist services to national users.

Our service is fully integrated into National and Regional quality assurance schemes. The department is fully accredited with CPA and had its first UKAS inspection in 2016.  The department offers a broad repertoire of tests and services including; extensive Factor assay, thrombophilia and lupus investigations for congenital and acquired disorders of Haemostasis and Thrombosis. 

Specialist coagulation services include investigations of Haemophilia and allied disorders, Thrombophilia, Antiphospholipid antibodies, platelet function and ADAMTS-13.   A rapid and responsive 24/7 ADAMTS13 service for the differential diagnosis of Thrombotic Thrombocytopaenia Purpura (TTP).

The Haemostasis and Thrombosis Centre is designated as a World Health Organisation collaborating centre for the diagnosis and comprehensive care of patients with bleeding and clotting disorders and offers an unparalleled test repertoire In addition the Coagulation Department has close working relationships with UKNEQAS for UKNEQAS Blood Coagulation.
